Organization
Baltic Sea Solutions
Project Leader Anders Riel Muller
Summary
Baltic Sea Solutions (BaSS) is a Danish non-profit organization with the mission of fostering sustainable regional economic
development in peripheral and island communities. Its focus is on creating self-sustaining communities with the capacity to
innovate continuously in their use of technology to power social development, economic development and environmental
sustainability. BaSS plays a role in achieving these community-based goals by acting as strategy and planning advisors to
regional governments and project developers. Its primary contribution comes from forming and maintaining productive
university – industry –government – community interactions focused on applied technological innovation. BaSS operates a
number of Community Test Facilities that are the centers of its field evaluation activities. At these CTF sites, community
groups, government institutions, researchers and industrial entrepreneurs work together to adapt and implement emerging
renewable energy and water solutions. The CTF facilities provide ASL Affiliate collaborators with a real-world physical
venue to apply, assess, and advance their research findings in an environmental and socio-economic context. This greatly
enhances the resulting product solutions, improves installation and customization protocols, and expedites the transfer of
laboratory innovations to the public via commercialization processes.
Baltic Sea Solutions offices in Palo Alto and Denmark are the primary sites of BaSS activities. BaSS is financed on a
‘per project’ basis, with primary sources of funding coming from the European Union, The Danish National Government, regional
Danish governments, and industry.
Project Description BaSS affiliation with ASL enables it to build new and improve
upon existing collaborations on projects with other ASL Affiliates. Bass currently collaborates with the TCL and ASST ASL Affiliates,
and is enthusiastic about the possibilities for new joint projects in the spheres of renewable energy technology and water remediation
with additional ASL Affiliates. The overall Community Test Facilities activity will be led by Anders Riel Muller. Specific CTF projects
will involve companies, universities, students and researchers from Denmark and California, and likely from many other countries,
on a project by project basis.
The objective of BaSS’ ASL affiliation is to strengthen and develop new research/demonstration projects
within renewable energy and water remediation technologies through the end of 2009 and beyond. Our presence at ASL will enable us to
work more directly with our existing partners including TCL and ASST. Our affiliation will enable our partner researchers and students
to collaborate on-site at ASL and UC Santa Cruz on a regular basis by using the transient office space in the ASL Commons when needed.
These visits will usually be for short periods of time (up to two weeks). BaSS also anticipates expanding collaborations to include
other ASL Affiliates such as SERF and SWTC, the Bioenginenering branch at Ames, The Jack Baskin School of Engineering and the Environmental
Studies Program at UCSC. The intention is to work with other ASL Affiliates in developing test and demonstration projects for technologies
within:
- Solar PV and Energy Storage
- Grey water and waste water treatment technologies with a particular focus on algae
- Nano materials for renewable energy conversion/storage and CO2 reduction
- Multifunctional and/or electromagnetism shielding materials for wind turbine blades
